Taysha Milagros Clark was a mentee with Girls Write Now from 2011 to 2012. She is now studying at Barnard College, and is a member of GWN’s Youth Board.
The time has come to give a shout-out to the beautiful and talented Girls Write Now community.
When I graduated from the program and went on to college, it was as if I left two homes. Today, as a member of the Youth Board, I can look back and see the tremendous impact that GWN has had on my life.
When I step into the Girls Write Now headquarters today, I realize the blessing that it was to be surrounded by such ambitious, passionate and talented ladies. My thoughts were allowed to run wild, and I was able to delve into all that I am with a new lens. My pen and keyboard may not have been happy, however: my pen lost a substantial amount of ink, and rather than gently making love to my keyboard, I vigorously attacked it. Though the office on 37th street is a relatively small place, it holds thoughts larger than life.
As a program alum and member of the Youth Board, I am able to see behind the scenes—and let me tell you, it is one of the most productive, bustling organizations that I’ve experienced. It is amazing to see all the dedication and love that goes into the running of GWN.
So, let’s give a shout-out to GWN, its talented mentors and mentees, the hardworking staff and all its supporters. Let’s give a shout-out to the magnificent world of writers and dreamers.
