Raisa Aniqa

(she/her) Alum, Mentee

Raisa Aniqa is currently a senior at Stuyvesant High School who, in the fall, will be pursuing Literature and Creative Writing at college. She's a proud, working-class Bangladeshi-American from Brooklyn, NY, and much of what she writes relates to her background. Her love for her favorite books (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and Lolita in particular) is a bit dorky, but she's undoubtedly a better writer for it. On top of reading and writing, Raisa also loves art history, nature walks, her younger sister, and annoying her English teachers with emails sent at five in the morning.

Artist‘s Statement

I am more than the soil that’s been sown with my blood, but my writing is imbued in my fascination with my ancestors. Lineage, family, and the desire for home combine to make a powerful drug, one that many first-generation Americans like myself use in our writing. My American origins are what have given me the privilege and opportunity to be so vocally feminist and artistic, to question my background. My writing is always both an appreciation of where I come from, and a critique so we do better.
