SUMMARY:Page Turners: The Secrets to Keeping Readers Hooked
DESCRIPTION:In this three-part fiction series\, writers will explore what makes a story impossible to put down. From building tension to crafting mystery\, each workshop will dive into the art of keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Participants will learn how to reveal (and withhold) information for maximum impact\, experiment with pacing and tone\, and discover how to sustain suspense in any genre. Whether your story is eerie\, romantic\, or dramatic\, you’ll leave with new tools to make every scene pulse with momentum. \nWhat does a character feel? Or rather\, how does it feel to be a character in a story? This Community Studio sets out to help writers understand how they can develop their stories by understanding their character’s bodies. This studio is all about the 5 senses\, taking space in the narrative and creating tension.

SUMMARY:Voice\, Values\, & Leadership: College Prep Demystified
DESCRIPTION:This studio invites participants to explore college preparation through the lens of leadership\, self-reflection\, and storytelling. Writers will reflect on their values\, experiences\, and emerging identities as a foundation for self-advocacy. Together\, we’ll practice using writing to claim voice\, confidence\, and direction for the future. We strive to deepen students’ understanding of the college preparation process and how they can best make use of the opportunities available to them. \nThis session helps participants move from self-reflection to real-world impact by identifying how their values show up through actions\, decisions\, and leadership moments. Participants will begin shaping their experiences into meaningful “story moments” that demonstrate who they are beyond labels.

SUMMARY:Public Policy 101: Why Government Matters & How It Works
DESCRIPTION:In the words of Abraham Lincoln\, democracy is a government of the people\, by the people and for the people. Government impacts every aspect of our lives. We exist at the intersection of local\, state\, and federal frameworks for how a society should run. With freedom and good fortune comes responsibility and democracy works best when everyday citizens are using their voice to help shape the world we live in. \nPolitics is not for a select few—government impacts every single one of us. Explore how you can get involved and use storytelling to influence policy.

SUMMARY:Fictional World Building: Creating a World Readers Won’t Want to Leave
DESCRIPTION:This community studio is an exploration into World Building. In fiction\, the world that your book or novel idea exists in\, is the world in which you are meant to build for yourself and your audience. In this studio\, we are asking participants to explore and create the foundational fabric of a fictional world. We seek this by looking at details from existing fictional worlds\, asking questions from participants’ perspective of the real world\, and examining the intended purpose of the stories that they create. \nHow Do Characters Interact in The Thing? In this lesson\, participants will be asked to explore and define the ways in which characters interact with the fictional world and each other. The exploration will be fostered by asking participants to look at interactions that exist both in media and in the real world and seeing what elements could be helpful for the interactions of their characters.

SUMMARY:Standing up to Power with Wit and Humor: Meet The Creators Of The New Documentary\, Ask E. Jean
DESCRIPTION:In this Friday Night Salon\, you’ll dive into the art of non-fiction storytelling through film. Join Ask E. Jean Director/ Producer\, Ivy Meeropol (Indian Point\, Heir to an Execution)\, and Ask E. Jean Editor/ Writer/ Story Producer\, Ferne Pearlstein (Sumo East and West\, The Last Laugh)\, for a dynamic conversation on how documentaries are shaped from concept to final cut. With a peek into their latest film ASK E. JEAN and guided writing prompts inspired by its subject\, the singular gonzo journalist E. Jean Carroll\, you’ll be invited to explore your own voice and approach to non-fiction writing and storytelling. \nAsk E. Jean tells the audacious and deeply human story of E. Jean Carroll’s journey from Miss Cheerleader USA to journalist\, author\, editor\, and beloved advice columnist. In recent years\, E. Jean undertook an extraordinary public reckoning\, a confrontation with the past that reshaped her legacy and inspired others to speak out and no longer remain silent. This film is a portrait of an indomitable woman who refused to be defined by the worst things that happened to her and who proved it’s never too late to reclaim your story. \nThe filmmakers are excited to engage with emerging writers who are eager to tell their own stories and to explore the craft of working with others’ narratives through curiosity\, care\, and collaboration.
