Welcome to Graphic Design Fundamentals, a mini-course available through the Multimedia Tour! In today’s visually-driven world, effective communication is about more than just words. This course is designed to provide budding writers with essential graphic design skills to enhance their storytelling and engage their audience. Through a blend of hands-on projects and discussions, students will learn how to create visually appealing content that complements their writing.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and explain the fundamental principles of design, including balance, contrast, alignment, repetition, and proximity.
- Analyze and apply typography principles, including font selection, hierarchy, and readability in design projects.
- Develop skills in visual storytelling by creating designs that convey messages and evoke emotions.
- Recognize the importance of audience and purpose in design, tailoring projects to meet the needs and expectations of specific target groups.
- Plan and execute a complete design project from concept to final execution, demonstrating the design process and decision-making.

- Mentor/Mentee: Meet 2-3 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.
- Peer-to-Peer: Meet 2 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.
- Affinity Groups: Meet 1 time per month and attend at least two per month of the engagement events listed below.
