Class of 2023

There are a lot of emotions that take place with graduating, these are a mix of mine.
Freshman year,
a fresh start.
Once at the top,Â
Now back on the bottom.
Four years felt infinite.Â
Sophomore year got shut down.Â
Blank screens,Â
And two classes a day.Â
Junior year,Â
Everyone had masks.Â
Grades,
grades
and grades.Â
Senior year.
Felt bizarre,
I’m in a trance,Â
What was once my school,
Is no longer mine.
I am now an alumni.Â
How desperately I wanted time to speed up.Â
Desperately wanting to move the tassel from right to left.Â
I was ready,
Now,Â
Feelings aren’t being articulated.Â
School started at 9
I always waited for 3:20 to come.Â
I waited for the end.Â
I am now at the end.Â
Someone who was never good at goodbyes,Â
has another one to checkoffÂ
I’m no longer a kid.Â
College is nextÂ
and a new chapter is going to be started.
Process
I’m a graduating high school senior, so this piece represents my current set of emotions. Writing this reminded me it’s okay to have a mixture of emotions, to be happy yet be sad. It also made me think more about my future self in college. I had been recently writing down my current thoughts and had parts of it drafted. After rereading my drafts I decided to add more.

Seema Khan
Seema is a senior at a high school in New York. Recently she had decided to explore the journalism career path a little more. When she isn't drafting thoughts on a paper she is either reading or crocheting. Crocheting she had learned from her grandmother at a young age. She started from making coasters to now making actual clothing pieces. She had not always enjoyed reading, it wasn't until she read "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn (one of her favorite authors) that she realized what she had been missing out on.
