James Baldwin Teen Creative Contest

In celebration of the centennial of his birth, NYPL is inviting New York City teens to enter a creative contest inspired by Baldwin’s wide-ranging work for the chance to be published in a special magazine and win $250.

Through short stories, essays, letters, or narrative/comic art, we want you to take inspiration from Baldwin’s work and life and tell us what you’re passionate about, what inspires you, what angers you, what you’ve learned about life, or what gives you hope. Your entry can be an essay, a short story, or a letter of no more than 2,000 words, or five letter-sized pages of narrative/comic art.

IF WOMEN Writing Contest

Answer One of the Following Prompts:

Identify a cause you care deeply about. In 150 words, describe how you would solve this issue or imagine its outcome in a woman-run world. Your response can be practical, visionary, or even fantastical—grounded in reality or inspired by imagination. You would start from the starting point of the new world that women rule and this scenario is occurring in that world.

Example: Imagine a future where elections require emotional intelligence, global health data is unified to cure diseases in months, or history is taught through immersive storytelling.

OR

Give us one word you believe defines what it would mean to live in a world run by women. Think about the main emotion that comes to you.
