To those who know Girls Write Now, it’ll be no surprise to hear that our mentees took the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards by storm again this year. We’re delighted to extend our congratulations to our amazing teens who received a total of 52 awards!
Girls Write Now mentees took home 8 Gold Keys, 14 Silver Keys, and 30 Honorable Mentions, with many teens picking up multiple awards. Jennifer Lee, a junior and second-year mentee, won 2 Gold Keys, a Silver Key, and 2 Honorable Mentions. Watch her performance from last year’s CHAPTERS Reading Series.
Eda Tse, a second-year mentee in the Digital Media Mentoring Program, was awarded a Gold Key, 2 Silver Keys, and an Honorable Mention. One of those Silver Keys went to Zombies on the Hudson River, a piece from the Girls Write Now 2014 Multimedia Anthology: Breaking Through, for which she combined a number of skills she learned in our studio workshops.
With wins in critical essay, flash fiction, poetry, personal essay, sci-fi/fantasy, memoir, and short story, among others, these awards represent Girls Write Now’s commitment to helping to increase visibility for diverse writers, to teaching girls to live a writer’s life, and to empowering them to express themselves in a variety of genres. Brava, girls!
