For Mami Y Papi

This project is close to me as it goes through the journey of self reflection and of healing generational trauma. I try to find my mom’s father as well as finding out my dad’s family who, to my knowledge, have either passed or changed their name. This is my best project because it is a reflection of a common wound that kids like me have. Identity issues are prevalent in people of color and this helps me gain some sort of closure with my family as well as help my mom heal.

Process

The idea for this podcast stems from a conversation of my racial background and how my family does  doesn’t look white but our last name is European. This got me thinking of how much I don’t really know anyone in my family past my mother and how this is a common thing for first generation kids or people who come from a country that has a long history of colonization. I used podcasting as it helped me develop a liking for my voice and for words. Though the project isn’t complete, I hope to gain a connection to my heritage.
