Her, An Indian Girl

By Aaryana Sharma

“Her, An Indian Girl” reaches out to girls who may feel low about their appearance or features. It teaches her to love how she looks and how she has been crafted. “Her, An Indian Girl” is for girls who feel underrepresented, a reminder that they are beautiful and valued.

Her eyes

Dark brown

Like chocolate pearls

Intoxicating and sweet

Her hands

Like soil

Fresh, pure

And earthly

Her palms like sand

Smooth

And soft

But weathered

By rain

And tears

Her hair

Not silk straight

Or coiled in curls

But messy, frizzy

And as thick

As rope

Massaged with

Coconut and amla oil

Her nose perched

On a throne

Upon her face

Perfect

As though

It was meant to be right there

Her fingers dark and elegant

With poise

And strength

She is the daughter of earth and stars

Graceful but messy

Strong and capable

She is indeed

A desi girl

Process

I wrote “Her, An Indian Girl” as a reminder to myself that I am beautiful, even if my stories, experiences and appearances are not shared by others. It was a note to myself and a story I decided to share with others that shows that everyone is unique and beautiful.
