I met God Herself, and She was Beautiful

By Scarlett Burwell-Pharel

I wrote my poem after my ex-boyfriend and I broke up, we were on and off for three years and when we got together it was very toxic. The day after we broke up I wrote this poem because I felt uplifted after the breakup, and I felt like God.

I met God Herself, and She was beautiful

She was tall and strong.
Taller than I imagined.
She was as strong as ten men.

Her beautiful caramel skin glistened in the sun,
Her ancestors’ spirit shining through the sun.

I met God Herself, She was powerful.
Her long locks flowed in the air, a symbol of Her ancestors’ resilience.

I met God Herself,
Her long beautiful arms, a symbol of all the pain and struggle She gracefully overcame.

I met God Herself as I was crying about why he won’t love me.
And God Herself told me She loved me.
And that was the best love I’ve ever truly experienced.

I MET GOD HERSELF, INSIDE ME
