I live in the liminal space between blue and gray Things slip through the hole of my pocket I almost catch them When I sweep my hand over a photograph frame it fills my lungs after I exhale It's what lingers on my hands after brushing my mother's hair It crawls into my ears as I sleep and leaves through my eyes when they open It's blue It's gray
When I learned about Girls Write Now’s anthology, I knew that I wanted to submit poetry. I love poetry, though writing it to be published is a first for me. I started by splattering out my different observations and things I find to be beautiful in ways hard to articulate. I ended up observing my surroundings more acutely as I fine-tuned the uniting tone of the poem through incorporating different scenes and sensual description. For both poetry I write for myself and to be published, I start as a free bird and write anything I feel like writing about. However, to publish my work, I pay closer attention to word choice and tone so each poem feels like a cohesive piece.
