My Week in School

By Kristina Dawoud

This podcast goes into the life of one of many high school students. Each high school student has their own activities, and this just focuses on one student. This represents my best work since it’s relatable to most of the other Girls Write Now mentees. We’re all high school students and deal with so much during the school year, and sometimes we just need to hear someone else going through a similar thing to feel better about a bad or good day.

Process

This idea kind of just came out of the blue. I was really interested in the work my mentor Jordan does as a podcaster and wanted to know more about the process, but I didn’t know where to start. Jordan gave me the idea of recording my week in school since I’d recently had my school’s annual winter concert. Creating this multimedia piece taught me a lot about recording an audio piece. There’s a lot of patience that goes into it, and it’s not always going to come out perfectly. I’m kind of a perfectionist when it comes to technical stuff, so sometimes I’d have to re-record certain parts. Overall though, the experience was fun and I wouldn’t mind making another podcast.

Meet the Pair

MENTEE KRISTINA DAWOUD & MENTOR JORDAN GASS-POORE’

Kristina’s Anecdote: Working with Jordan has definitely been an amazing experience. She allows me to write however I wish, allows me to speak my mind and put thoughts onto the page. She also encourages me to be free with my writing. Aside from this, we have a lot of bonding time outside the writer’s world, such as going to the museum, getting coffee together while talking about our caffeine addiction, making our relationship grow stronger and stronger. Jordan has made me more confident in showcasing my written works. For this, I couldn’t be more thankful to have Jordan as my mentor.

Jordan Anecdote: Kristina reminds me a lot of myself when I was seventeen, despite growing up in different states. She’s taught me about growing up and going to school in New York City (and why I need to buy a monthly MetroCard). We both enjoy writing creatively and teaching others. She wants to major in education; I have a teacher’s certification. (And our reasons for wanting to pursue this noble profession are the same. If interested in our reasons, please feel free to ask.)
