The Ocean’s Depths

By Yoseivy Aguilar

Based off of my love for the ocean but fearing what is underneath the waves.

The ocean will never be fully explored
Just like our ever growing universe
Never knowing what’s underneath the waves
Maybe there are creatures
Some that went undiscovered for so long
Some that inspired so many myths and legends
Perhaps there’s just nothing at all
Just water filling all of the cracks of the world

They say eyes are the windows to a person’s soul
You can say the same for the Earth’s water
At surface level, you see what’s it like
Waves crashing onto shores
People having fun in the salty water
Fishes and crabs that dare to venture to the top
Wonderful and calm
like meeting someone for the first time

By only looking
You can never truly see
You must build for what it really is
Venture into the depths
Fill with things no other person has ever seen

Process

I have a fear called thalassophobia, meaning having an intense fear of deep waters and seas. I love going to the ocean, especially when visiting family in Puerto Rico. I remember one day learning myths about sea creatures, like the Kraken and learning that only about five percent of the Earth’s ocean is discovered. There are times where I refused to even get waist deep whenever I was at the beach, fearing that something will grab me. My fear of the deep sea isn’t as bad as when I was a kid, but even now that fear affects the love I have for playing in the sea
