Wrapped In Red

By Princesa Santos

In my poem, I explore themes of self identity and purpose through the eyes of the mythological character of Persephone. “Wrapped In Red” goes through Persephone’s memories of a simple decision that altered her future.

Lost
I was.
Alone
I felt.
Taken
without conception,
I had no recollection.
What was my life?
My purpose?
Maybe
it was to be a porter,
rended beyond its borders.
Or a caretaker
forgotten,
to also be taken care of.
But was this all I was made for?
It couldn’t be,
can’t.
I must’ve been made for more,
than just this.
I give,
share
have no possession.
But when it comes to me
there’s only pain,
deception.
Beauty is fallacy,
its presence wrapped in red.
The truth
revealed after a bite.
And my
long
last
freedom
is lost
every winter’s night.
