Your Voice Matters: Graduation 2015

We asked May CHAPTERS keynote speaker and Bad Feminist author Roxane Gay how she found her voice and what it means to find your voice and she told us: “Reading first and looking to people I could relate to…Everyone has a voice. It’s a question of finding the courage to use it and the first step in finding the courage is knowing that no matter who you are or how quiet you think your voice is, your voice matters.” This year’s theme for the Writing and Mentoring Program and the Digital Media Mentoring Program was “Voice to Voice.” Each of the girls pieces published in the anthology Voice to Voice and art book VOICE/VOICE focuses on this theme and finding their voice.
We know that Roxane’s advice rings true for each of our mentees as they anticipate the next steps in their lives. Each year the depth and breadth of our mentees talent astounds us. We’re so proud of all that they have accomplished. After anywhere from one to four years in our programs, our girls go on to college and boundless opportunities. Just a few of this year’s colleges lucky enough to have our girls include Dickinson College, Columbia University, Hunter College, University of New Haven, Lehman College, Medgar Evers College, LIU Pharmacy School, and Wellesley College.
