Lena Dunham's Famesick Writing Contest with Girls Write Now

Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Submit your Piece by June 1st to Write Your Way to Wellness—and Win a Cash Prize + Publication!

Lena Dunham + Girls Write Now

Girls Write Now is proud to join forces with author Lena Dunham to celebrate her new book Famesick, and to support the next generation of writers as they navigate the twists and turns of their journeys toward wellness.

In her memoir Famesick, Lena Dunham asks herself a difficult question: What has the cost of fulfilling her dreams really been, and was it worth it? She discovers that while the fever of being seen by the world can make us feel famesick—fragmented, exhausted, or lost—there is a deeper, more lasting relief found in writing. This is the state of internal reconnection that happens when we learn to live with what we cannot change, turn our regrets into wisdom, and return to what, and who, we love. Girls Write Now invites you to write your way to wellness.

Writing Contest Prompt

So much of what we carry—anxiety, pressure, the fear of being seen as less than whoever we're supposed to be—gets carried in silence. Talking about mental health is the first step to de-stigmatizing it. In 800 words or less, write an essay, story, poem, or in any genre, about a moment you stopped performing, named something you'd been told to keep quiet, or found relief in writing down what you couldn't say out loud. Give us the real thing, not the polished version.

A Word from Lena Dunham, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Famesick

On Girls Write Now

“Reading, writing, and being encouraged to do both is what made being a young woman tolerable for me. The teachers who fostered my young self expression remain the heroes of my life. Girls Write Now is doing the essential, joyful work of nurturing the next generation of writers, and of giving them not just the tools, but the permission, to tell the truth about their lives. This organization means so much to me, both personally and creatively. As the beneficiary of a transformative and life-affirming education in creative writing, I know firsthand the gift that kind of mentorship and community can be—for both the writers and for all of us lucky enough to read them.”
