Writing Our Way Through War: Poetry for Processing

Devastation in the Ukraine puts a laser focus on atrocities taking place every day around the globe. We are anguished by what we see and hear from family and friends, and by what is being covered—or in some cases not covered—in the press.
What is the role of poetry during wartime? How can we use the written word to help ourselves and others cope with violence, fear and loss? In this Community Chat, we’ll talk through our thoughts and feelings surrounding war and use poetry as a way to help process them.
Join us in this brave space as we write our way through the trauma of war.
Meet the Teaching Artist
Brittany Barker
Brittany Barker is an educator, poet and the creative director of Creative Soul House. She’s served in education for 8 years, as a humanities instructor, curriculum designer and a Dean of Programs where she spearheaded schoolwide youth and adult-development initiatives for enrichment and socio-emotional learning. Brittany has been recognized by the Walton Foundation for her leadership in transformative arts education and currently curates holistic and social-justice experiences for schools and organizations in local NY communities.
More Ways to Discuss & Write About the Experience of War
We are asking members of our community to contribute any piece of their writing that they would like to share on the topic of war. This can include personal essays, journalism, poetry, visual art or just some of your thoughts jotted down. The writing can be about your personal experiences or a zoomed out look at this topic. Consider answering the question, “How has overseas armed conflict and war impacted you?”
