Participants will read Alexis Pauline Gumb’s short essay “Seagram Consciousness” to build our understanding of the conventions and impact of eco-writing as a genre. Using maps that explore what Lenapehoking/NYC looked like before colonialism and urban development, as well as NYC’s street tree map, we will create our own piece of eco-writing inspired by a tree we choose to befriend and learn more about.

In this studio, participants will look for defining phrasing and imagery in two poems and branch their own pieces from either the ones they analyze in the session or others they find.

In almost all forms of writing, including memoir, creative nonfiction, short fiction and poetry, stories carry more authenticity when you write from your own knowledge base. In this studio, you will probe your life experiences and consider ways to turn them into engaging stories and poems.

This session focuses on various forms of collage writing across genres. We will learn about collage techniques and learn how to apply these skills in our creative writing.

For this first studio session, we will explore zine making, taking note of the resources and tools that go into such. By the end of the session, expect to come out with ideas and even the foundation for a pitch you can use to start your own zine.

In this studio, we’ll discuss two examples of cross-disciplinary artwork and how we may expand our creative power beyond traditional boundaries. This generative session will encourage participants to begin connecting their passions.

In this lesson, participants will dive into the heart of of every story: the world. What does it take to craft a unique land, community, and experience for characters to thrive in?
