Welcome to Script360!
My name is Sally Familia (they/them) and I am a Community Coordinator here at Girls Write Now! I am very excited to be your Learning Journey Lead. A poet first, I acted in musicals all of high school and took playwriting & screenwriting classes as an undergraduate Creative Writing major. As I engaged with script writing during my time as a student, I noticed that although I enjoyed acting, I truly love writing dialogue more than performing it.
What is your history with scripts? Do you have experience with script writing? Conversely, are you dipping your toes into the craft for the first time? If so, why script writing?
What is your favorite component of a script? What excites you the most about being a part of Script360?
Please respond to this forum with a brief introduction and your answer to the questions above. I look forward to learning more about this phenomenal group.
October 19, 2023 at 3:32 pm #177134Hello!
My name is Kamaria Williams (she/her) and I’m a new mentee at Girls Write Now. I started screenwriting in freshman year when I took an intro screenwriting course. I immediately became obsessed with this new style of writing and wanted to make a career out of it. Admittedly, I still have a lot to learn but my most recent experience was writing a draft of a short film over the summer at LMU Pre-College.
Honestly, my favorite components of a script is the amount of detail added. I personally enjoy the fragmentary sentence style since I find it way less intimidating than prose. Screenwriting gives me more freedom to paint the story I want to tell without all the added details typical in prose. Additionally, I don’t need to worry about dialogue formatting or anything. What excites me the most about Script 360 is gaining the knowledge I need to improve my own screenplays! Overall, this form of writing is easy and fun and I can’t wait to improve.
Side note: I would really love to learn playwriting if that’s possible. I have no experience with that and I honestly really want to learn. So if I can learn, I can’t wait to start that!
October 20, 2023 at 7:06 am #177246My name is Alisha (they/them/any) and I’m a mentee at Girls Write Now. I’m into film and theater and have taken drama/theater/acting classes in middle school and high school. I have practiced playwriting and written analysis on plays like Othello (if you want I can show you what I wrote and explain the prompt). I also like to frequently analyze the shows and movies I watch, although not all of it is in writing. This is my first time dabbling in screenwriting.
One of my reasons for becoming a mentee at Girls Write Now is to practice different types of writing. Screenwriting aligns with things I’m already interested in and have already explored. I also think it’ll help me be a better writer, specifically with writing stories, which is another thing I’ve already explored. I’m just very excited to learn more in Script 360.
October 20, 2023 at 7:17 am #177247I wanted to add, since it seems like I can’t edit my response (the edit opinion was there and then it disappeared), that when I’ve written stories or come up with them in my head, I’m usually envisioning a scene of a movie. It’s another reason why I’d like to explore scriptwriting.
October 20, 2023 at 2:18 pm #177288hello, my name is Genesis Juarez (She/her). Screenwriting and playwriting have always been a huge passion of mine since doing theatre in high school, I’ve realized I can combine my favorite hobbies into one thing that I can allow others to enjoy. Especially since I’ve entered contests for playwriting. I love the components of making a story for people to enjoy. I want to inspire others who are like me. Those who are young Hispanic girls or wish to become a part of television or on stage! I’d love to connect with more mentees or mentors to get feedback and just to create an incredible bond!
October 20, 2023 at 9:59 pm #177378Hi! I’m Karen (they/them), a new mentee at Girls Write Now. I have no experience with script writing unless you count the one time I tried my hand at it incredibly informally for an undergrad horror fiction writing class. From that experience though, I learned firsthand how different script writing is from prose fiction and it opened my eyes to another mode of creative expression. So, I wanted to be a part of Script360 as a challenge for myself and also to improve on my dialogue writing skills as I tend to struggle with that a lot in my prose writing.
October 22, 2023 at 4:53 pm #177391Hi everyone!
My name is Sophia Venables (she/her). I’m an older Mentee, joining GWN at 24, but it’s never too late for creative guidance and I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of Script 360. I have written a couple, short, sitcom-style scenes, and I’m eager to learn the proper format for script writing. I write a lot of standup comedy, and script writing feels like a natural expansion to a similar style of creative writing. It might not come as surprise then, that my favorite component of scripts is well-scripted humor. I am most excited to learn the technicalities of script writing, so that I have the correct structure with which to write out my ideas (both current and future).
Thank you for leading us on this Learning Journey, Sally, and it is lovely to meet you all!
October 23, 2023 at 9:36 am #177392Hello! My name is Kylie Lohse and I am a new Mentee from NYC. I am a high school junior at Academy for Careers in Television and Film. I started script writing at a young age, always being a story teller. Once I entered high school, I began to write even more. I am the writer, director, producer, and editor of multiple short films that I have worked on throughout high school. My favorite element of a script is when it’s descriptive to the point where you can heavily imagine it. As a director, its wonderful to see it all come to life.
October 24, 2023 at 10:13 am #177602Hi everyone! My name is Skyla and I’m a new mentee joining from Raleigh, NC. I am a fiction MFA candidate at NC State and before my Master’s program, I pursued a creative writing minor in undergrad. There, I took a screenwriting class during my senior year, but I honestly wasn’t in the headspace to retain as much as I wished I did at the time. I’m really excited to give the craft another go and I look forward to learning more about the technicalities of scriptwriting.
October 24, 2023 at 2:31 pm #177634My name is Fiona and I’m a returning mentee to Girls Write Now! This is my second year being a part of Girls Write Now and I recently graduated from the University at Albany with a degree in journalism. My career interests involve working in public relations and journalism.
I do not have a history with scripts and have no experience with scriptwriting. I am dipping my toes into the first time into this craft. I’ve always enjoyed writing personal essays, nonfiction, memoirs, and journalism. Scriptwriting is something that is really new and different for me so I’m looking to explore this craft and grow my skills in writing different genres. This will also help me get out of my comfort zone!
Looking forward to working with you all and getting to know you!
November 3, 2023 at 9:38 pm #178593Hello my name is Janiya McCray. I live in New York and go to a performing arts school that allows the students to get a taste of every single thing including playwriting when I comes to being on tv or in a theatre. I have experience in playwriting instead of screenwriting but they are fairly close so I’m a way this is my first time experiencing and being educated on the entire screenwriting experience. I am very excited to be taught something new and see my creative progress after this program comes to an end. I am excited to see my elevation.
