Each Journey is a package of Writing Course Content, Mentorship, and Community Experiences. Our team of teachers, artists, and content experts has thoughtfully curated each Journey to be a dynamic, multifaceted experience. Journeys can be light touch or intensive, short or long-term, ayschronous or in real time.

Journey Cycles

A cycle is a three-month time period. Journeys are indicated as one, two, or three cycles long to meet your schedule and goals.

The Power of Punchlines: Stand-Up Comedy for Change (Summer 2025)

In this journey, participants will explore the power of comedy as a tool for social change, with a special focus on stand-up comedy. From climate change and economic inequality to LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and mental health, you’ll learn how to write and perform material that blends humor with meaningful social critique. Through workshops and performance coaching, you’ll develop your own comedic voice. Discover how satire and personal storytelling can raise awareness, inspire dialogue, and challenge the status quo— all while keeping your audience laughing. By the end of the journey, you’ll have developed a 5 -10-minute stand-up routine that not only entertains but sparks meaningful conversations about the world around us. Comedy is a form of intelligence, whether you’re new to comedy or a seasoned performer, this journey will help you use humor as a force for social impact.

Teleplays: Writing for TV (Summer 2025)

The Teleplays: Writing for TV Journey is designed to help develop the skills and understanding needed to work as a writer in today’s TV industry. This Journey provides insight into the work of a scriptwriter – a deep understanding of TV storytelling and professional scripts, drama vs comedy scripts, professional working practices, and employment strategies. Specific topics range from story structure and formatting scripts to actually seeing a script to fruition.

Teach GWN (Summer 2025)

In this journey, members of the GWN community will develop curriculum and facilitate a community studio for one or more cycles within GWN’s Collaboratory structure. Each cycle involves facilitating three community studios, one per month. Participants will gain valuable skills in leadership, teaching, and community building. Mentees and mentors can facilitate a community studio either solo (if they are 18 or older) or together as a pair.

Journey Mentorship

If you would like to be matched one-to-one with a mentor or mentee for the duration of a three month Journey, explore to find the right one for you. This is a great option for those who want to form a long-lasting supportive relationship. Each pair determines the timing and format of their sessions, and at least one hour-long session is required each month.

Be a mentor or mentee for a virtual or in-person event specifically relevant to your interest and/or expertise. This is a great option for busy students and professionals who want to get to know the community but do not have the capacity to commit to a full cycle.

Mentees, get immediate help from a mentor for one-hour sessions. Mentors, make a difference in a mentee's life to help them achieve their goals. “I’m returning to Girls Write Now with an interesting perspective. I am a recruiter at Hearst Magazines, while also being a freelance writer outside of work hours. Before ending up on this career path, I didn’t have many connections to reach out to while forging the start of my career, but I knew Girls Write Now was a resource. While I was a mentee, I had imposter syndrome and felt like maybe I wasn’t cut out to be with other writers. But Girls Write Now gave me the confidence I needed to continue forward. When I graduated college, I was able to make a name for myself by forging connections. Overall, now I understand how to navigate a competitive landscape and network as best I can—while also holding the key to how to get a job in magazine publishing. Now that I am a mentor, I want to show my mentee that there is a place for them in this industry. My goal is to form a strong bond and use my industry knowledge, my network, and my listening skills to understand what they need most. If they are shy like me, I will help them break out of their shell, show them how to make connections in their industry of choice, so that once they make it there it’s much easier.
