Victoria Gao is a passionate writer and high school student. As a Girls Write Now mentee, she enjoys exploring different writing and multimedia genres such as science fiction and erasure poetry. She is also a writer for her high school newspaper and enjoys informing others about current events.
Artist‘s Statement
In the past year, I’ve been expanding on a world that I built for a sci-fi short story published last year in my Girls Write Now portfolio to be the foundation of a sci-fi novel that I’m writing. Through Girls Write Now workshops and research, I’ve learned about the steps in the publication process and applied what I learned to write a query letter for my sci-fi novel Spinning Genes.
Set in London in 1892, two women meet at an art exhibit for famous (and recently deceased) painter Wil Finch. Through their brief encounter, we find out what makes them admire his work so much.
This story highlights the positive and negative impacts of gene editing tools on a person’s health and personality with the use of time travel and fantasy character, the Immortal Wish Maker.
“To Go or Stay” uses drawings and images to describe an apocalyptic world suffering from climate change. The people in that society have to choose to stay on or leave Earth as disasters affect different parts of the US. This choice will affect how they can contribute to society and improve the environment.
