NYC Street Tree Consciousness: How Eco-Writing Can Create a Bridge to the Natural World Around Us
About the Event
In this studio, participants will learn about the genre conventions of eco-writing. We will read poetry and prose that departs from the tradition of nature writing and work towards bridging the divide between humanity and the natural world in a time of environmental chaos. Using the eco-writing we read together as a guide, we will write our own reflections about navigating the ecology of NYC.
Many of New York CIty’s waterways were buried as the land became more industrialized and urbanized. Toni Morrison wrote “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” In this session, participants will read eco-poems written by lucille clifton, June Jordan, and Rajiv Mohair to study the ways water shows up in their words. We will reflect on our relationship to the bodies of water that are important to us and write poems inspired by our water memories.
