6-7:15 PM ET

virtual event; open to the public and all mentees & mentors

From the creative mind behind Octavia Spencer’s forthcoming production…

All is fair in love—or is it? What would you do if your dream job was snatched out from under you by the one you’d left in your rearview? So what if your heart still skips a beat when you see them? They stole your dream. But what are you willing to do to get what you lost in love and life? In this Salon, author and Girls Write Now mentor Donna Hill will lead us through the intricacies of writing about love, romance, and the workplace.

Join us for an evening of forbidden love, and learn all about the craft of writing Romance Fiction. Participants will respond to a series of writing prompts based on Donna’s recently released novel, After the Lights Go Down, that ask “what if?” What if you met your dream mate at work? What if your ex was hired at your same job?

Donna will also discuss the process of her 2020 best seller Confessions in B-Flat being adapted for the screen with Amblin Partners and Executive Producer Octavia Spencer!

At Friday Night Salons, guest artists share their personal and professional journeys, an excerpt of their work, and guide us through a series of inspirational writing prompts.

After the Lights Go Down by Donna Hill

About After the Lights Go Down

All is fair in love and war…and television morning shows! Two headstrong news anchors collide at the desk and in the bedroom in Donna Hill’s latest!

Two news anchors. One job. And a passion that won’t be denied…

It’s lights, camera, scandal when competing morning show anchors Layne Davis and Paul Waverly set their sights on the same promotion. Yet sizzling looks and smoking hot kisses are proving more distracting than the competition itself. Paul has always been the object of Layne’s desires, and now’s her chance to close the deal.

But will a future with Paul mean sacrificing her dream of having both a successful career and love?

About Confessions in B-Flat

Essence bestselling author Donna Hill brings us an emotional love story set against the powerful backdrop of the civil rights movement that gripped a nation–a story as timely as it is timeless…

The year is 1963. In Harlem, the epicenter of Black culture, the fight for equality has never been stronger. The time is now. Enough is enough. Yet even within its ranks, a different kind of battle rages. Love thy neighbor? Or rise up against your oppressors?

Jason Tanner has just arrived in New York to help spread the message of his mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of passive resistance, while beat poet Anita Hopkins believes the teachings of Malcolm X with all her heart: that the way to true freedom is “by any means necessary.” When Jason sees Anita perform her poetry at the iconic B-Flat lounge, he’s transfixed. And Anita has never met anyone who can match her wit for wit like this…One movement, two warring ideologies–can love be enough to unite them?Confessions in B-Flat is a celebration of the hard-won victories of those who came before us, and a stark reminder of just how far we still have to go.
