I was inspired when I had sleep paralysis for the first time, and I want other people to feel it as well, how nightmares love to play around. This represents my best work in the program this year. Women are not afraid of fear.
Process
The process of creating this project on the theme of horror started in my photography class. I was shooting a picture of my friend, and I started to videotape it on my phone and used an Instagram filter. I learned to have fun, and the thing that surprised me the most was the editing process because my mentor Meghan taught me how to edit the film. I started to play around and it became perfect. I felt splendid.

Maribel’s Anecdote: Meeting Meghan was exciting because I never had a mentor who is close to me and has seen the journey of my process of my photography and school. She taught me how to be open when it comes to writing. Being with her I learn so much, like how to edit my video for Girls Write Now and going to different places where I need to take the train. I was afraid to take the F, M, or Q, but I made it there on time and home safe. But now I’m not afraid anymore, because Meghan taught me to be strong and be open.
Meghan’s Anecdote: The first time we met, Maribel showed me a portrait she took of a woman she met on the street and told me that photography basically allows her to travel the world without leaving her city. I’m so impressed by Maribel’s openness and generosity of spirit. I’ve gotten to see firsthand how her creative work is the perfect vehicle for it, by allowing her to document the stories of the people she passes and capture the beauty she sees. This passion motivates me to see the world the same way, wherever I am.
