I think this is my most meaningful piece of work because it speaks to identity a lot. People who struggle with making friends or getting good grades will connect with this piece. Beware, the beautiful sunsets and powerful words might make some cry.

MENTEE ALICE KRESBERG & MENTOR AMELIA POSSANZA

Alice’s Anecdote: Amelia, my mentor, and I always meet at this one coffee shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s always a struggle to find a table and pick something to eat. Our conversations about writing can be a bit weird, such as this one conversation we had about an octopus who was a librarian. The customers sitting next to us probably think we’re crazy and usually give us some side eyes.

Amelia’s Anecdote: Alice and I first connected over her cats. She has two—Lola and Charlie—and I’ve got one. As we continued to meet for our writing sessions, though, I quickly realized that we also share a love of sitting quietly to write (often while eating brownies!) and playfully building on each other’s prompts. Alice’s imagination is quick to leap into other worlds, whether she’s casually describing her mother as an eight-armed librarian in conversation or writing a story about a girl who can speak, not just to wolves, but to every animal in the kingdom. Yet her writing is always grounded in this world and shows us our surroundings in a new light. Hers is a voice that we all need to hear.
