Epileptic Born

By Amari Murray

Have you ever known someone with epilepsy? Or ever wondered what happens when someone is having a seizure? Well let my words of my health introduce you to the world of being a victim of epilepsy.

Loss Consciousness.
Lights out.
Listen as my body hits the floor.
I become numb with no movement whatsoever.
Need assistance as quick as possible.
Am I okay? What’s gonna happen?
Help me understand what just happened to me.

Wake up multiple hours later confused.
Was it the heat? Stress? Flashing lights? Idk.
Prescribe my medication so my health can stay on track.

It sticks with me life long and year round.
Can happen any moment, anytime, anywhere.
Just gotta make sure I have someone with me.
When alone who knows what’s possible.

Process

Creating this piece was a very easy thing for me. In the process of creating this poem I was thinking to myself, I am a victim who was born with epilepsy and I am very lucky to be able to have made it this far in life. Now not everyone truly knows what epilepsy is or even what happens during a seizure. So I thought to myself as a female born with epilepsy, why not use my voice to tell the world about my health problem and my experience with it.
