In the Books

By Kathy Rivera

“In the Books” is a short clip about trying to find myself and who I want to be. This video is worth watching for those who do not know who they want to be and want some type of inspiration. This is coming from a girl who does not know what she wants to do in her career path, but at least knows where she wants to start. This work made me feel vulnerable and can help others understand that there are other women to look up to.

Process

This idea came from an event I went to with Mary, my great mentor, for Girls Write Now. I wanted a project that would not overwhelm me, so I thought of using a book in my piece. I created my digital media piece on the app “Stop Motion”, and it was super easy and fast to use to make my short clip. One challenge that I encountered was needing another person to help me with creating my digital piece, so it was efficient. After completing this project, I felt relieved and happy that I decided to do this idea. The project was weighing on me for a while, and I feel so much more happy and content with myself now that I’ve finished it.

Meet the Pair

MENTEE KATHY RIVERA & MENTOR MARY DARBY

Kathy’s Anecdote: Being in Girls Write Now and working with Mary has been a blessing and a great experience. She has opened me up to new things, such as different writing styles and different places to work around the city. I used to be shy with my writing and wanted to keep it to myself, but I can see the difference this past year has made. I am now much more open to sharing my writing with others, especially Mary. Mary and I have traveled to faraway places in immense crowds just so we can get to know each other and strengthen our bond, all while eating some chocolate and sipping hot chocolate.

Mary’s Anecdote: Kathy and I clicked right away. I knew I would love working with her. We laugh a lot together, and it’s a joy to get together and just talk. Kathy is a young woman finding her voice and on the verge of taking her place in the world. She will, too. She’s smart, she’s eager, and she’s worked hard to get where she is. She’s looking forward to becoming more independent, extending her learning, and stretching herself as a person. I’m proud of her. She will go on to do more than she knows she can.
