I wanted to highlight the important role nature, specifically, rain plays in our lives.

Nature whispers words in the rain
Splashing on the floor with no refrain
A mercy to the world and the ground below
Freezing in the winter as the frosty snow

When the days are long the nature calls out
With clouds of grey flowing about
when the grapevines shrivel nature returns
It gives and gives, a provision not earned

Nature’s words come down from the sky
Whispering “mercy, mercy” to anything it passes by
The words of soothing come and go
When it will come again, we do not know

Process

This work was inspired by a Writing Works workshop I attended about Earth Day I originally intended to talk about human growth and change, similar to the way nature grows and changes. I wanted to reflect on my own experience of growing and changing to where I am now in life, along with the biological and nonbiological factors that have affected me. At one point in my development of this poem, however, I came across something I wrote prior— “words the sound of rain.” This made me reflect on the importance of rain on the earth and how it is a catalyst for life. Thus, I began researching different styles of poems and settled on a rhyming poem. With the help of my mentor, I edited certain areas and although I struggled a lot with certain rhymes, my mentor helped me pick out how to go about handing these difficulties as well as what I should add to make this rhyme better.
