You Are The Universe

Many people take time to appreciate the world around them, but how many of us have taken the time to explore our worlds within?

“Make a wish” – you say.
But you don’t know,
That I have wished
To be stuck in this moment.

Only when
dusty tables fill up with cards,
Crumbs pave the wooden floors,
Bench by the railing gets marked by shoes,
Sheets sway hanged on the balcony
Doors are left open
Plushy couch is uneven
Sink is filled with dirty plates
Empty bottles roll off the deck of dates
Unfinished games have been laying out for days
I think of you.
I think of summers,
Wildflowers braided into hairs
Sunny peaches that pour juice in one bite
Tastes that are even better by the river,
Warm lamp lights that spark gold on your skin
Hammock swings enough of your scent
When dogs bark in the yard to notify we are back
Late night walks in the town of empty lights, where camera can’t pick you up
Laying on cold concrete stairs
only to stare at starry nights
“Make a wish” - you say.
But you don’t know
That I have wished
To be stuck in this moment.
If you have never felt the desire
To be stuck forever
Run
Run in the meadow
At sunset, when everyone’s happy
When cities fill up with reflections
Bakeries set cookies for sale
Picnics culminate
People start conversations
and into their relationships sunsets become “their thing”.
When flowers start facing east
When sun meets the ocean
Chill breeze starts blowing stronger
Your brown eyes get warmer
Your thoughts disappear
You’ve lost the lead
But you don’t stay still
You feel the urge to get outside
Your heart pounds
You have to persevere
You realize that
You’re infinite,
Because the universe is infinite
Yet
You are the universe that’s wanting for exploration.

Process

I started working on this poem as a school assignment. I had to write a poem describing specific moments using at least two literary devices.
