Girl Number Three
The cover of Shrien’s new novel, Girl Number Three.

My name is Shrien Alshabasy, and I am the sixteen-year-old author of Girl Number Three. Girl Number Three is a young adult fiction novel centered around two very unique characters — Eve Evol and Ben Fiasco. Eve Evol is a leukemia patient, a victim of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Ben Fiasco has suffered with a rare verbal disorder called Verbal Dysdecorum since the age of sixteen, when his mother passed away.
Verbal Dysdecorum causes the mind to shut off all social boundaries and allows the person to say what they’re thinking all the time. Now both graduating high school students, Eve and Ben realize that they don’t fit into the norms of the world. In this novel, a cancer patient who would rather party and die drunk and a boy who blurts out the most embarrassing truths find themselves in a rusty green truck, heading full speed toward The City That Never Sleeps — New York.
I wrote this novel to speak a universal truth. Sometimes it’s not what happens or what you say that matters — sometimes it’s the absence that changes your life. The absence of words, the absence of taking action, leaves you with regret, and sometimes sadness. When you lose someone who is very close to you (like a parent, or family member), you find yourself thinking about the things you could have said, the actions you could have done. Our memories are tainted with fringes of regret, and it’s up to you to lead the thread back to its origin.
