Our Allende Barbie Doll Celebration
Barbie and Girls Write Now celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring changemakers like Isabelle Allende whose stories helped shape the world and continue to inspire generations.
Girls Write Now has the thrill of reading lots of books together as a community, and we’re especially excited that our mentor and honoree, Isabel Allende, is about to launch her next novel, My Name Is Emilia del Valle (Ballantine Books). Isabel has supported Girls Write Now through her foundation, and partnered with us and Mattel for the launch of her Barbie Inspiration Doll.
In light of this highly anticipated release, we share with you a keynote speech that Isabel gave to Girls Write Now mentees about living through uncertain times, finding your independence as a woman, and the power of writing!
“My favorite authors change depending on the stage of my life that I am in. My favorite author at the moment is Isabel Allende, who specializes in magical realism in her novels. I find myself so drawn to her writing because of her focus on women throughout her novels. I am in awe of the way she combines myth and realism and find myself longing to emulate her form of writing. She is also incredibly inspirational to me because of her own life story and the challenges that she had to overcome. I personally love that I am able to read her novels in Spanish as well as English because it helps me keep up with my own hispanic roots.”
