“I am a story waiting to be told. Memoirs waiting to be written. Patience burning of suffrage, withering of double standards, of double consciousness. I am woman.” —Carmin Wong, 2014 mentee-alum
For two years at Girls Write Now, Hadia, a development writer who grew up in Pakistan, mentored Carmin, an aspiring poet and a native of Guyana. Together they explored what it means to be a writer, a woman, a person of color. Now, with a few awards and publications under her belt — an honorable mention for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, Poet-Linc 2014 Anthology, Invictus Youth Essay Writing Competition Winner, Urban Word Teen Poetry Slam — Carmin’s in her first year of college at Howard University, and their relationship is just as strong.
Watch them bring down the house during Carmin’s last CHAPTERS performance. They’ll give you chills and leave you feeling nothing short of inspired.
