It’s hard to believe that with last Saturday’s digital workshop, or Dorkshop as we call them, the first year is over for our Digital Media Mentoring Program. While our fall 2013 Dorkshops focused on audio recording, our spring semester is all about bringing writing to life using HTML and web design.
Over the semester, mentees have learned how to make their own dynamic websites, create GIFs to show visual moments in their writing, and tell their stories. After five stimulating (and extremely fun!) Dorkshops, mentors and mentees have the digital skills to show off their hard work – and share it with the world.
On May 3rd, from 2-5PM, mentees will debut their final pieces in our first ever Interactive Media Showcase, WRITE / CODE / SPEAK, in collaboration with Art In General. Using a variety of mixed media, including traditional writing, audio, GIFs, and HTML coding, the interactive installations of WRITE / CODE / SPEAK showcase the writers’ unique voices, backgrounds, and experiences as high school students in New York City. Youth writers present their media pieces with performances, encouraging the audience to experience their creative processes and stories right alongside the girls. This showcase represents the culmination of the Girls Write Now Digital Media Mentoring Program for 2013-14.
In collaboration with Art in General, a nonprofit that assists artists with the production and presentation of new work and informs and engages the public about their work, WRITE / CODE / SPEAK also features artist Lisi Raskin. Her exhibition Recuperative Tactics serves as the backdrop for the youth showcase.
