What It’s Like to Interview Phoebe Robinson and Tomi Adeyemi Written by Girls Write Now mentee Maxx Carr, who is a senior at LaGuardia High School.
Meeting authors Tomi Adeyemi and Phoebe Robinson was a surreal experience. I had read (and loved) Tomi’s book, Children of Blood and Bone and I had heard of Phoebe’s work‚ 2 Dope Queens and her new book, Everything’s Trash, But It’s Okay. Girls Write Now asked me to interview these two amazing honorees at the Day of the Girl event, hosted by DVF, so I did a lot of research before picking my questions. Yet, all the research and preparation I had done didn’t stop me from being starstruck when I met Tomi and Phoebe. Even though I had unofficially met Tomi at the Jimmy Fallon Book Club event in July, I was surprised and honored to hear that she had read my article about that experience and that it had inspired her to participate in Day of the Girl. “Girls Write Now will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope one day I can become a mentor.”

Girls Write Now is a program that I am also thankful to be a part of. It has paired me with an incredible mentor, Sarah, whom I have learned so much from. Over the past three years she has worked with me on all of my writing endeavors, and I have become a much better writer and person because of her. Girls Write Now has also connected me to wonderful events that I never dreamed I’d attend, such as the Day of the Girl. Although after this year I will no longer be in the program as a mentee (I am a current high school senior), Girls Write Now will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope one day I can become a mentor.
