We are so proud to call Lena Dunham a Girls Write Now Champion and friend. If you haven’t had a chance to read Lena’s thoughts on what it means to have intergenerational mentors, please see below and forward to a friend or mentor of your own.
I hope you will consider supporting our work, at such a critical time.
With gratitude,
Maya Nussbaum
Founder and Executive Director of Girls Write Now
Dear Friend,

Girls Write Now gives young women an incredible and essential gift: the chance to tell their own stories and become, in Nora Ephron’s words, the protagonists of their own lives.

I was lucky enough to go to schools where writing was a cherished skill, encouraged and nurtured and applauded. It’s so important that young women are told this is a valid form of expression, that their voices are worth celebrating and that they have within them the tools to create a new narrative for generations to come.

Girls Write Now is a gift not just to the young women it serves but to the rest of us who will become their devoted readers for life, filling our shelves with their books.

I have been lucky enough to have mentors, from Nora Ephron to Zadie Smith, who show me what it means to lay it on the line as a writer. I want every girl to have that gift.

Thank you for supporting Girls Write Now.

Kirby-Estar Laguerre video from Awards gala
Mentee Alum, Kirby-Estar Laguerre, performed an excerpt from Lena Dunham’s Is It Evil Not To Be Sure? at The 2016 Girls Write Now Awards. Lena donated all profits from the book to Girls Write Now.
If I could be didactic about just one thing (though I hope to God that limit is never imposed upon me), it would be my belief that young people, young women in particular, must commit their experiences to paper. If for no other reason than this: only you will ever have these particular experiences and we don’t want to have lost them after you go, or forget, or grow up and get terrible snow boots. But you may also find, as I did that sentences might
become the planks that form a raft that drags you ashore, wet and
gasping on a welcome beach.
