Rise Speak Change: The 2017 Girls Write Now Anthology
At the QWERTY Digital Media Exhibition, our mentees showcased projects that are changing the way we tell narratives. A video overlaid with powerful poetry, thoughtful podcasts, and interactive games created with Twine — our mentees used the skills they learned in our digital workshops to create these multi-platform masterpieces.

Our mentees are defining the digital age by bringing the craft of writing into the 21st century. In our Digital Media Mentoring Program, we boost girls’ tech savvy and creative potential through digital media. In bringing our curriculum and writing approach into the digital age, we prepare the girls we serve to truly be the next generation of writers—on whatever platform they choose. Students are paired one-to-one with a digital media professional and together they transform their writing into digital art. All workshops are facilitated by graduate students at Parsons The New School for Design. Our workshops feature writing and digital skill-building exercises, prompts, and share-outs to diversify participants’ modes of self-expression. At the end of a program year, girls are equipped to tell a story in GIFs, a poem in HTML, and take their words to the next level.Together we embark on a journey of creative workshops, public readings and showcases, opportunities for publication, and more, all to give girls the tools to advance their writing through different mediums.

Reimu and Marisa
The project is an animation about two girls named Reimu and Marisa, who battle monsters with their magical powers to protect their town, Genso. For this project, I was inspired by a video game called Touhou. It represents my best work in the program this year because I put so much time and effort into thinking about the story and plot; planning it out; and creating it.
Her
"Her" tells multigenerational female narratives from real young women who shared their thoughts and experiences with me. They talk about their mothers, themselves, their fears, regrets, and hopes. I created a found language audio poem using their interviews to combine their voices and express a piece of what it's like to be seventeen/eighteen and a young woman navigating changing relationships.
What the Scissors Taught Alana
Today, we're constantly being criticized for how we look, what we wear, and how we act, and we're forced to change ourselves to avoid criticism. Alana faces the same problem. She loves her long, jet black hair. But as her hair gets increasingly longer, people are starting to talk about her, and especially her hair. Feeling pressured, she decides to cut her hair short. She feels bold, but something doesn't feel right…
In Flux
You are slowly becoming the person you always wanted to be.
The Tree Comedian
My name is Oakley. I am a tree comedian. I do comedy for trees.
Uncle (Let’s Say) Bob
I fought off my first monster at age five.
Senjuti Gayen Is
It is a bold thing to acknowledge who you are.
We Want You!
We are the force of females.
Freedom
Freedom, a simple word, yet with so much meaning. Something that we all yearn for, but not everyone has…
By Grace, through love
You are the outer Grace; I am the inner.
