virtual event; open to the public and all mentees & mentors
Girls Write Now & NaNoWriMo cordially invite you to an evening filled mystery, murder, and a touch of magic. In this Friday Night Salon, we will be talking about writing mysteries, crafting mysteries alongside other genres like fantasy and historical fiction, and how to execute the perfect (fictional) murder.
Nicole Glover will also share her journey through NaNoWriMo to publishing The Conductors and The Undertakers with HarperCollins, and the joys of writing genre mashups.
Join us for a fun evening with mystery themed prompts and just the right amount of mayhem.
Nicole Glover is the author of the historical fantasy series, Murder and Magic, which begins with The Conductors. When she’s not writing, she’s working as a UX researcher where her knowledge about murder and other mysteries is surprisingly useful.
Magic, murder, and a bit of mayhem is all in a day’s work…
Whether it’s bodies found chopped up in a trunk, cursed necklaces, or deadly magic, Hetty and Benjy Rhodes are on the case.
As former Underground Railroad Conductors, solving murders and other mysteries is work they gladly take on as they navigate Post Civil War Philadelphia. While Hetty and her husband have solved dozens of murders, their newest case involves the brutal murder of a friend.
While the death is terrible enough, the circumstances around it lead Hetty and Benjy into a number perils. Perils that involved snobby elites, doubts about their closest friends, magic of the most dangerous sort, and unexpected revelations that will change everything….
Murder never rests and neither do they…
Used to the unusual and strange, Hetty and Benjy Rhodes are barely taken aback by any case that comes to their door. But nothing is as peculiar as a case where the answers, motives, and even the murder are bit a too perfect.
Such a case involved Raimond Duval, a teacher found dead following one of the many suspicious fires that have erupting recently in Philadelphia. His death is declared a tragic accident and the investigation points to a powerful Fire Company known to let homes in the Black community burn to the ground – particularly when they’re connected to the growing magic rights movement.
It’s only when Raimond Duval’s son is found dead that Hetty and Benjy become suspicious that there might be more to the previous case than they thought before. And so they renew their investigation. The search for information sends Hetty and Benjy chasing after ghosts. Ghosts that flit through underground tunnels. Ghosts who leave clues and hidden messages in plain sight. And ghosts from their own past that just can’t seem to die….
National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with a first draft. They enter the month as elementary school teachers, mechanics, or stay-at-home parents. They leave novelists.
Writing a novel alone can be difficult, even for seasoned writers. NaNoWriMo helps you track your progress, set milestones, connect with other writers in a vast community, and participate in events that are designed to make sure you finish your novel. Oh, and best of all, it’s free!
