Polished Prose: Perfecting Personal Statements with Girls Write Now and HarperCollins

Join HarperCollins and Girls Write Now for an inspiring intergenerational exchange designed to elevate young writers’ college application personal statements.
It’s crucial for young writers to express their authentic lived experiences in meaningful and organic ways. Our goal is to help them provide the context, complexity, and depth that will enrich their personal narratives.
Girls Write Now veteran Teaching Artist Susanna Horng, along with HarperCollins employees, will guide mentees through a concise lesson on crafting personal statements, followed by dedicated time to draft their essays. Then, our “Mentors for the Day” will work with mentees in small group breakout sessions to refine their drafts. Mentees will engage in constructive feedback using our Active Listening technique, a proven methodology for effective collaboration.
Mentors will also share insights about their own college and career journeys. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your personal statement while benefiting from a wealth of intergenerational knowledge and networking!

Meet the Teaching Artist
Susanna Horng
Susanna Horng is a writer and Clinical Professor at NYU Liberal Studies. Her stories and poems have appeared in Bennington Review, Minerva Rising and The Rumpus. She has been supported by Catwalk Art Institute, a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, and a Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship.
