virtual event; open to all mentees, mentors & members
Writing That Changes the World shows how the written word can be used in service of real life social issues. In this studio, we will read mentor texts, learn various styles of journalistic writing, consider how other media can be used in advocacy work, and even start our own pieces of advocacy journalism. Bring your creativity, enthusiasm, and energy to the table!
Does objectivity in journalism truly exist? Is it appropriate, as a journalist, to take a strong stance on an issue? In this session, we’ll look at the writings of other journalists on the topic, discuss instances in which journalists have been barred from writing about topics in which they have a personal stake, and delve into other barriers to advocacy journalism, including self-doubt, lack of agency, and burnout.
