A Bibliotherapy Series: Bibliotherapy or poetry therapy also goes under the names of “writing therapy,” “journaling therapy,” and “transformative writing.” But Shakespeare would say a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. In this series, Sherry Reiter, a clinical social worker and registered biblio/poetry therapist, will lead participants in a series of exercises that are used to treat depression, anxiety, and trauma. Using prescriptive, receptive, and creative techniques, learn more about the intersection of writing and healing. Thought-provoking and fun, these exercises prompt creativity–the greatest healer of all.
This month, after a short discussion of the various kinds of anxiety, we will move through a series of creative visualization, expressive writing, and journaling sentence stems to reduce stress and induce a sense of relaxation. We will also apply the Japanese technique of haiku and haibun.
