Meredith national media and Girls Write Now meet for an intergenerational exchange to help teen writers ideate and draft winning essays for the Real Simple Essay Contest launching October 13. Meredith employees—“Mentors for the Day”—help mentees take their drafts to the next level using Active Listening techniques in small breakout rooms. Employees will also answer questions about their professional journeys at magazines like InStyle, Real Simple and People.

Meet the Teaching Artist

Amy Maclin
Amy Maclin has worked as a writer and editor for numerous magazines, including Elle, Allure, Whole Living, O, The Oprah Magazine and Real Simple. She received a 2017 Clarion Award for Best Magazine Feature Article for her personal essay, “No Place Like Home,” about the changes to her Tennessee hometown.

Writing Works Mentees are required to attend one Writing Works workshop per month. For October, you can choose between this workshop or Writing Works Workshop: Personal Statements on Wednesday, October 6. Of course, you can always attend two workshops in a month if you’d like!
Writing Works Mentors are required to attend to attend one Writing Works workshop every other month. You can attend this one or a Writing Works workshop in November, Landing the Role, Part I: Resumes on Wednesday, November 17.
Writing 360 Mentees & Publishing 360 Mentees, all Writing Works workshops are optional.
