A Year in the Life

High school is a new chapter in every adolescent’s life, and it can be terrifying. Especially if you do not know anyone or if you are going through some mental issues. I was in the same predicament as some of you and looking back, it would’ve been nice to get some friendly advice from someone my age. My podcast can hopefully help high school students make the best of their four years or look back on them with a smile on their face.
Process
The idea stemmed from a conversation we were having about my life, and school was a recurring topic. Since I am a senior, I started reflecting on the past four years I’ve spent in school. I have personally been through a lot and have grown as a person, and we thought it was important to share and help others. Podcasting and editing is a lot harder than it looks, but I really enjoyed it. It was the first time I was in a professional recording booth, and there were a few challenges recording. Mostly, being too self-critical and nervous was preventing me from giving my all, but after an hour or so, words came out easily.

Fikirte’s Anecdote: Every week Stephanie and I have met either at a mall giggling about life or in her podcast studio recording. Going into Girls Write Now, I had no idea what my relationship with her would end up being. All I knew is that we would become friends. Well, we’ve become best friends. We make jokes and have fun, but still manage to get work done. I feel like we can talk about anything and be sassy to each other. I am so grateful I have a wonderful mentor like Stephanie.
Stephanie’s Anecdote: When I came into Girls Write Now, I had no idea what kind of mentee I would have. All that I hoped is that we’d become friends. As soon as I met Fiki I knew that my expectation would become a reality. She is smart, kind, hilarious, and just an amazing energy to be around. She reminds me of the kind of young woman I wanted to be at eighteen. We spend our sessions getting things done while joking around. I’ve watched her grow a lot this year and am excited for her future. She is wholeheartedly herself in a way that many people my age are still trying to figure out and I can’t wait to see what kind of woman she becomes.
