S. Schultz: Came here to say this.*
*The author of this comment wishes to make clear that it took her twelve minutes to get the courage up to post this one simple response in solidarity with the author of the original post because she second guessed herself in doing so the way she second guesses everything. She typed out an elaborate thesis supporting the author that included vetted scientific sources, relevant literary references, and relatable lyrics (deep cuts) from her favorite band (genderqueer feminist-environmental-antiwar activists. duh.). She paused to cross-check her facts, ensure cultural sensitivity, and double checked herself and all sources of input for potential bias.
She remembered that she is an introvert.
She hit the backspace key 472 times consecutively. She typed the above instead to show some support. She considered adding a raised fist emoji. She questioned if it was the raised fist of fighting power in unity or a fist bump one would share with a bro.
She swore.
Hit post.
Vowed to stay off every one of these trash sites.
She checked ten minutes later to see if her comment got any love.
I worked on this while my mentee Camilla Rodriguez worked on her Empathy piece and Inimitability Statement for our course (solo writing with built in encouragement/commiseration). I took inspiration from the suggestion of using a footnote as structure in the assignment, and from my own life.
