Wanted Food, But I Had Homework

This all started out with a six-word prompt written by a classmate of mine, “wanted food, but I had homework.” I ended up turning it into something special to myself, and something relatable to everyone in high school.

I hadn’t eaten a good meal in so long. All I wanted was a cornucopia of delicacies, a supreme pizza, a box of a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, something, anything! My stomach turned from a content, peaceful being into a ferocious beast with each and every growl. There was only one thing holding me back: homework.

I stared at the endless textbook pages, the blank notebooks. Every question blew a dusty fog in my brain, which left my mouth parched and in need of some crisp, ice cold refreshment, like a nice cold glass of lemonade.

But then I started to think of what I really craved. Was I jeopardizing my chance of improving my skills because of greed, because of thoughts of cheeseburger deluxes and a giant cup of Sprite? I wanted something so much that I forgot what I truly needed to crave: an education. I wanted food, but I had—and needed—homework.

MENTEE ALEXIS MORGAN & MENTOR VICTORIA CHOW

Alexis’s Anecdote: I think that writing with Victoria has always been a way to prepare for my time of actually taking my place in history. I would love to be remembered for my work, not only in writing, but also in music and theater. I didn’t know where to start—that is, until Girls Write Now and my mentor Victoria. She gives me amazing constructive criticism on all of my pieces, and helps me in fun ways, not only with academics, but also with personal issues. I love how much our relationship has grown, as well as how we’ve grown individually.

Victoria’s Anecdote: As Alexis’s mentor, I’ve watched her grow from a high school junior trying to find her voice in the world to a college-bound young woman who’s bold, self-assured, and excited for what’s ahead. From the day we met, I’ve been in awe of Alexis’s diverse skills, from sci-fi writing to playing five instruments to loving plants and biology. It’s been an honor to work alongside her, in our local Starbucks, free-writing over coffee, marshmallow bars, and the very best company. I’m so excited for her next adventure, and to stay in touch along the way.
