Girls Write Now Mentorship

Mentees

Mentees at Girls Write Now are writers and leaders, typically between the ages of 14-24, from around the nation. Through a lens of creativity and activism, mentees produce stories, podcasts, poems, films, and more with the support of a mentor and the Girls Write Now community.

Frequently Asked Questions about Journeys

Mentee FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Journeys

  • Who is eligible to be a mentee?

Typically mentees are ages 14-24. Mentees should be curious about learning and growing as a writer of any kind, but they don’t need to consider themselves a good or strong writer. Mentees come from all over the U.S. and can participate in all of Girls Write Now’s programming virtually.

  • How do I become a mentee for a Journey?

Mentees can apply to join a Journey by selecting the Journey they’d like to join and clicking “Apply Now”. New mentees will complete a New Mentee Application. Current mentees who would like to return for additional cycles do not need to re-apply.

  • How long is a Journey?

There are three active programming cycles throughout the year, during which Journeys are offered for mentees and mentors.

    Fall Cycle: November – January
    Spring Cycle: March-May
    Summer Cycle: July-September

During the months between cycles (February, June, and October), there are no active Journeys, but mentees and mentors are encouraged to continue to work on their individual projects and creative endeavors.

  • How are pairs matched, and how long do they stay together?

Each Journey mentee and mentor must complete an application and an interview with Girls Write Now staff before joining The Collaboratory. Matching is then completed by staff based on key criteria including  location, needs, interests, and experience. Mentors and mentees are introduced to one another before the cycle begins. Oftentimes, mentor-mentee relationships can last a lifetime. But if a mentor or mentee needs to remove themselves from the program before the end of the cycle, Girls Write Now will try to find a replacement for that mentor or mentee.
