Girls Write Now
Reading as Resistance Challenge
Looking to read more books while supporting women and gender expansive writers? Join Girls Write Now’s Reading as Resistance Challenge! Set a reading goal, create a fundraising page, and ask your community to support a cause you care deeply about!
At Girls Write Now, we believe in the power of storytelling to shape culture, impact industries, and bridge worlds. When we read stories by people whose voices have traditionally been silenced, we ensure that their knowledge and creativity are preserved and amplified. That’s why we are launching the Reading as Resistance Challenge. We are coming together to read books by women and gender expansive authors before the end of Women’s History Month in March. To help us read more while supporting Girls Write Now’s mission, we are asking our friends, family, colleagues, and networks to pledge donations to get us to our reading goals.
Ready to get started? Here’s how:
- 1. Start your own fundraiser. – Create your personal fundraising page for Girls Write Now here. It only takes a minute.
- 2. Decide how many books you want to read before the end of Women’s History Month in March. – Whether it’s 1 book or 10, make it fun for you! Add this to your fundraiser description. For example, “I am planning to read these 3 books and 2 zines for Girls Write Now’s #ReadingAsResistance Challenge. [List the Titles That You Plan to Read]. Donate to help me reach my goal and support women and gender expansive writers!” The books do not have to be traditionally published, or even books at all! Works-in-progress, zines, magazines, and other media are welcome.
- 3. Share it loudly and proudly! – Share your challenge on social media using our toolkit, and directly with your friends and family. You can also share your thoughts on the books you read and your fundraiser progress along the way. Send your fundraiser link to at least 5 people and tell them why this is important to you. Everyone has a different reason for participating, and your story has power!
Everyone has a different reason for supporting Girls Write Now—and your story has power. Reading as Resistance is about reading the stories of others—and then sharing your own—to make sure those who have been historically silenced are empowered to share theirs. This is how we shift culture and effect change. One book at a time.
