Values help guide us and reflect who we are, aligning our team’s actions and the efforts we lead with purpose, fulfillment, and authenticity. As Girls Write Now grows and evolves, we continually review and evaluate how we state our values in light of what we, in community, hold true. No matter who administers them, our values stand the test of time, holding us accountable to honoring them. They define how, when, and where we are called to act.

Trust & Safety

Girls Write Now believes that trust is built over time and is maintained through consistent actions and transparency. Safety and security will only be fostered through trust. Girls Write Now commits to encourage, and in turn provide, spaces where marginalized gender identities feel safe to be witnessed in their entirety.

Trust & Safety can look like…

  • Sharing a piece I’ve just written
  • Receiving guidance from my mentor
  • Getting honest, useful feedback on my piece
  • Showing up authentically and knowing that I will be supported in my work
  • Knowing I can count on my mentor for support and advice when I need it
  • Sharing a piece that is personal to me

Curiosity & Evolution

Evolution is the ability to identify changes in the world and respond to them openly and with a curious outlook. Girls Write Now commits to growing and changing, embracing innovation, and discovery with every step.

Curiosity & Evolution can look like:

  • Taking a first draft across the finish line
  • Exploring the different facets of my creativity
  • Experimenting with new forms of expression
  • Trying an unfamiliar genre
  • Celebrating new ideas
  • Welcoming alternative perspectives

Creativity & Expression

Creativity is an approach to the world that encourages us to think beyond our current limitations, imagine new futures, and draw inspiration from those around us.

Creativity & Expression can look like:

  • Knowing that an individual’s perspective has the power to bring about change and inspire others
  • Writing a poem in computer code
  • Presence
  • An act of forgiveness
  • The freedoms I give myself to be witnessed
  • Speaking in first draft
  • Collaborating on a vision board
  • Expressing my feelings about the world in a Community Conversation

Community

Community is the web of connections we form with one another, which support our growth as writers, leaders, and compassionate people.

Community can look like:

  • Snapping, clapping, shouting out when a mentee reads a poem
  • Brainstorming solutions to a plot hole
  • Having conversations about what we’re working on
  • Sharing a piece in a publication with my peers
