Here & Now: Girls Write Now 2024 Anthology
In partnership with Dutton Books, Dottir Press, and Amazon Literary Partnership, Girls Write Now is thrilled to announce our newest publication, Here & Now: Girls Write Now 2024 Anthology. Available from Books Are Magic, McNally Jackson, and Amazon, the anthology is a multi-genre showcase from our 25th year of mentoring and training the next generation of young voices.

Do not read this book, unless you want to know what real humans are thinking. Taking poetic license to express things in ways that make AI fear it will be replaced by humans, the stories in these pages reflect the here and now: a collective urgency as the pandemic recedes, the world overheats, wars overwhelm, and the national discourse is conducted in a language far from love. In these pieces, cooking unites families, supermarkets become places of connection and adventure, neighbors evolve into mermaids as the sea levels rise, and every month nails are trimmed to cut down memory. The smallest gifts in life become impossible blessings of gratitude. There is a sense of battle with the norms and an understanding that things are not right, but they will be. This anthology is evidence of a future worth fighting for in which the long tradition of building community through the written word is upheld during the highs, lows, and everything in between.

A Reflection Of Life: On The Other Side
My parents and I share a special relationship and find comfort in having insightful talks daily. This piece is crafted based on a reflection to their answers on one of my favorite questions!
What would you even call what you see outside the window.
Someone once told me they saw me looking out a window and there was a lot going on inside. The floor was made of clouds and I was scared to jump.
Trauma
Trauma honors a woman who lost her life to a moving train at the 42nd Street terminal station in New York. This is my heart, rage, and tears in your hands.
Uncoordinated Silhouettes
Sometimes individuals wish to be blinded by reflection, distraught by the truth that lived in their childhood. This poem explores the duality of recollection and humanizes each perspective.
Secretly Special
Being on my school’s running team has been one of the most formative experiences of my life. This essay tells the story of one of the important lessons I learned about leadership.
Excerpt from “Shattered Glass”
Seventeen-year-old Darla has lived in the small town of Silver Lake her whole life, surrounded by memories of her family's history of abusive relationships.
House of Lies
House of Lies is the beginning of a thriller novel that Janiya plans to complete. It speaks to love, lies, revenge, and the consequences of choices.
My Names
Growing up, I would use any name except my own. It was partly because I didn't feel worthy of my full name, Emanuelle, and partly because I didn't like my nickname, Emmie. Eventually, I grew.
Winnie, Untitled
This is a character study of a woman named Winnie from the perspective of her friends, family and peers.
The Bracelet
This story, is about a teenage girl, who lives vicariously through the bracelet on her nightstand.
