Here & Now: Girls Write Now 2024 Anthology
In partnership with Dutton Books, Dottir Press, and Amazon Literary Partnership, Girls Write Now is thrilled to announce our newest publication, Here & Now: Girls Write Now 2024 Anthology. Available from Books Are Magic, McNally Jackson, and Amazon, the anthology is a multi-genre showcase from our 25th year of mentoring and training the next generation of young voices.

Do not read this book, unless you want to know what real humans are thinking. Taking poetic license to express things in ways that make AI fear it will be replaced by humans, the stories in these pages reflect the here and now: a collective urgency as the pandemic recedes, the world overheats, wars overwhelm, and the national discourse is conducted in a language far from love. In these pieces, cooking unites families, supermarkets become places of connection and adventure, neighbors evolve into mermaids as the sea levels rise, and every month nails are trimmed to cut down memory. The smallest gifts in life become impossible blessings of gratitude. There is a sense of battle with the norms and an understanding that things are not right, but they will be. This anthology is evidence of a future worth fighting for in which the long tradition of building community through the written word is upheld during the highs, lows, and everything in between.

LOST
As your voice fumbles, I look into your eyes, to never look back. You are shaking—or should I say trembling.
The Downfall of The Hopeless Romantic
When a hopeless romantic gets into a plane crash, how will her experience with love plague her possible final thoughts?
Her Confession, an Excerpt
Just when you think you've caught the criminal of the biggest case in your town, a meddlesome young police officer is there to foil your plans. Maybe he's right, but what are you to do?
Animal
When Evanna finds herself in a snowy forest pursued by a menacing figure with no memory of how she got there, she knows to do only one thing: run.
Behind doors are secrets (to discover or not)
A liminal space I found in my school, and what I left there.
Always There
Bed-Stuy had always been home for Jordan, but what will he do when something seems to be coming with him? Sometimes the real monsters are closer than you think.
Falling Through The Cracks
The short story is supposed to represent a phenomenon I see every day – kids falling through the cracks in public school.
Good Riddance
Two kinds of beings rule this world: the human and the wiz. They have separate niches that should never overlap or exchange because if the order is broken, all hell will break loose.
Dissociation
Dissociative amnesia. One man and his wife.
And Here I Breathe
Despite everything, time continues to tick on. Eventually, everyone's hourglass runs out of sand, and we run out of time.
