Change Makers applies the metaphor of the marching band to develop participants’ self-assurance, communication, and leadership skills—no musical experience necessary. Through inventive and reflective writing prompts, we will explore methods for developing our characteristic sound: personal values, experiences, and goals, as well as methods for harmonizing with the whole. We’ll talk honestly about what it takes to lead yourself, lead your section, and lead within your community, expanding beyond our comfort zones through small, tangible steps. Whether it’s performing on a field or simply surviving a social function, applying a leader’s mindset can help us form more meaningful connections and drive us closer to our goals.
In this session, we’ll explore how our personal narratives shape our leadership intincts, learn to tell the difference between a conductor (a leader whose success is measured by how good everyone sounds) and a controller (a leader whose sense of security requires the talent to stay smaller, quieter, or more isolated than it actually is), and begin rewriting any inherited scripts that no longer serve us or our communities.
